Therm process Engineering Pvt. Ltd. manufactures vertical ladle preheaters for drying and preheating ladle refractory before it receives molten metal. In a vertical preheater, the ladle stands upright and a burner fires down into it through a cover. This heats the refractory lining from the inside. Preheating reduces thermal shock to the lining, cuts the heat that molten metal loses to a cold ladle, and helps extend refractory life. Therm process builds the preheater around its own burners and combustion equipment. Share your ladle capacity and fuel for a proposal.

Why Preheat a Ladle?

A ladle carries molten metal from the furnace to the next process, such as secondary refining, casting or the caster. Its refractory lining is a large thermal mass. If molten metal is tapped into a cold or poorly heated ladle:

  • The metal loses temperature to the lining, which may force higher tapping temperatures upstream and cost energy.
  • The refractory suffers thermal shock, which can crack and spall the lining and shorten its life.
  • Newly relined ladles also need controlled drying to remove moisture from fresh refractory before first use.

A ladle preheater solves these problems by heating the lining to a target temperature before tapping.

What Is a Vertical Ladle Preheater?

In a vertical ladle preheater, the ladle stands upright on the floor or a stand. A cover or hood carrying the burner is positioned over the ladle mouth, and the flame fires down into the ladle. Hot gases circulate around the lining and exit around the cover.

The alternative, a horizontal preheater, fires into a ladle lying on its side. The vertical arrangement is common where ladles are set down upright in the shop between heats.

Therm process Vertical Ladle Preheater

Therm process supplies vertical ladle preheaters with its in-house combustion equipment:

  • Burners from the Therm process range: gas (LPG, CNG, PRG, CBM, Bio-CNG), oil (LDO, FO, HSD, LSHS) or dual fuel, selected to suit the plant's fuel.
  • Combustion blower sized for the burner.
  • Flow and ratio control with Therm process valves and regulators.

The preheater is sized around the customer's ladle capacity and preheating schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. What is a ladle preheater?
A ladle preheater is burner-fired equipment that heats a ladle's refractory lining before it receives molten metal. It is also used to dry newly relined ladles.
Q2. What is a vertical ladle preheater?
In a vertical ladle preheater, the ladle stands upright and a burner fires down into it through a cover positioned over the ladle mouth.
Q3. Why is ladle preheating necessary?
It reduces thermal shock to the refractory and limits temperature loss from the molten metal to a cold lining. It also removes moisture from new refractory before first use.
Q4. What fuels can a Therm process ladle preheater use?
Therm process burners are available for gas, oil and dual fuel. The preheater burner is chosen to match the fuel available at the plant.
Q5. What information is needed for a quotation?
Share the ladle capacity and dimensions, target preheat temperature, heating time available, fuel, and whether the ladle will be preheated upright at a fixed station.
